Florence County, located in northeastern Wisconsin, has a rich and diverse history that spans over centuries. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, mainly members of the Menominee and Ojibwe nations. These tribes relied on the abundant resources of the region's forests and rivers for sustenance and trade.

European exploration of the area started in the 17th century, with French fur traders and explorers venturing into the region. The French established several trading posts in the area, including Fort La Baye, which played a significant role in the fur trade network. However, conflicts between the French and British, as well as the American Revolutionary War, brought changes to the region's ownership.

With the Treaty of Paris in 1783, the area was transferred to the United States, becoming part of the Northwest Territory. As the 19th century rolled in, the timber industry began to thrive in Florence County due to its vast forest reserves. Lumber mills, logging camps, and sawmills popped up throughout the county, attracting settlers eager to participate in the timber boom.

The county took its name from Florence, the daughter of Samuel M. Petit, a prominent early settler and politician. In 1882, the county was officially established, and Florence was chosen as the county seat. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the economy of Florence County relied heavily on timber extraction, logging, and related industries. However, as the timber reserves became depleted, the economy diversified, and tourism and outdoor recreation have become increasingly vital aspects of the county's economic landscape. Today, Florence County continues to be known for its beautiful forests, lakes, and recreation opportunities.
