Built in 1880 and contractor Martin, Byrne & Johnston.

Two story hip-roofed sandstone building. A unique feature of the building is the use of small square windows a type of 'loophole' window on the second floor of three facades. Revealing the thickness of the walls, the small windows have a small interior opening which flares out to form a larger exterior opening... Other significant features include a molded stone cornice, a hipped roof and segmental arches capping the first floor openings. For more information, see NR file. NOTE: Recent research suggests that this building was never a courthouse for the county. Some of the information presented here appears confused and suspect.

Relatively intact and undergone no major exterior alterations or additions. Diamond-cut composition shingles replaced the wood shingles, and one interior chimney has been removed. Some interior modifications were made for residential use 1942-1956.

The Texas Historical Commission's (THC) nationally recognized and award-winning Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program (THCPP) has turned around the trend of disrepair and begun restoring these treasured historic landmarks. Texas has more historic courthouses than any other state. Today more than 240 courthouses still stand that are least 50 years old. About 80 were built before the turn of the 20th century. By the end of that century, most of these structures were significantly deteriorated due to inadequate maintenance, insensitive modifications or weather related damage. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) documented the condition of 50 of the state’s oldest courthouses in the late 1990s and determined that counties lacked the resources to preserve the buildings for future generations.
