FIRST MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH

JOHN HENRY KIRBY AND NATHANIEL SILSBEE BEGAN DEVELOPING THE TIMBER RESOURCES OF EAST TEXAS AND BUILT A RAILROAD FROM BEAUMONT NORTHWARD. THE FIRST TERMINAL ON THE RAILROAD, NAMED SILSBEE, GREW RAPIDLY ONCE THE SANTA FE RAILROAD BEGAN OPERATING PASSENGER TRAINS THROUGH TOWN DAILY. THE FIRST MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH OF SILSBEE, ORIGINALLY CALLED FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, WAS ORGANIZED AROUND 1900 BY REVEREND J.B. DUNBAR FOR THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY. JOHN KIRBY FURNISHED LAND AND MATERIALS FOR THE CHURCH BUILDING. THE BUILDING WAS TO BE USED FOR WORSHIP AS LONG AS THERE WAS A CONGREGATION, BUT IF THE CHURCH CEASED TO BE, THE LAND WOULD REVERT BACK TO KIRBY LUMBER COMPANY.

REVEREND F.K. KIRKWOOD, A MISSIONARY FOR THE TRINITY VALLEY BAPTIST ASSOCIATION, CAME TO SILSBEE AND REORGANIZED THE CHURCH IN 1922. AT THIS TIME, THE NAME WAS CHANGED TO FIRST MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH TO ELIMINATE THE CONFUSION WITH THE OTHER FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH. A NEW SANCTUARY WAS COMPLETED IN 1928. A STORM BLEW THE CHURCH OFF ITS BLOCKS IN 1939 AND WORSHIP SERVICES WERE HELD IN THE MASONIC HALL UNTIL 1940 WHEN THE CHURCH WAS REBUILT. REALIZING THE NEED FOR MORE ACCOMMODATIONS, A NEW CHURCH SANCTUARY WAS COMPLETED IN 1969 THAT INCLUDED THE ORIGINAL BELL. UNDER REV. BOOKER, THE ORIGINAL SITE WAS PURCHASED FROM THE TRUSTEES OF THE LAND, THE TRINITY VALLEY BAPTIST ASSOCIATION. THE CHURCH SUPPORTED THE CHRISTIAN CARE CENTER, THE SHELTER, THE YOUTH YOUNG ADULT FELLOWSHIP ALLIANCE FOUNDATION AND LOCAL AND FOREIGN MISSIONS. THE CHURCH CONTINUES TO EXPAND, HONOR THEIR HERITAGE AND ASSIST THE COMMUNITY THROUGH OUTREACH AND SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE.

As one of the most visible programs of the Texas Historical Commission (THC), historical markers commemorate diverse topics in Texas history, including: the history and architecture of houses, commercial and public buildings, religious congregations, and military sites; events that changed the course of local and state history; and individuals who have made lasting contributions to the state, community organizations, and businesses.

The city of Austin, the state capital, is known as the live music capital of the world. It is home to many music festivals, including South by Southwest (SXSW) and the Austin City Limits Music Festival.
Hardin County, located in the southeastern part of Texas, has a rich history dating back thousands of years. The area was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, such as the Atakapa and the Caddo. European explorers, including the famous Spanish explorer Alonso de Leon, arrived in the 17th century, leading to increased contact with the indigenous populations.

During the early 19th century, the region was part of Mexico. However, after Texas became an independent republic in 1836, Hardin County was officially established in 1858 and named after the leader of the Battle of New Orleans, William Hardin.

The county experienced significant growth and development during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of the most important events in Hardin County's history was the discovery of oil in 1902, leading to an economic boom. Oil wells were drilled, refineries were established, and the local economy flourished.

Hardin County also played a role in World War II, as the area was home to Camp Hardin, a military training camp. The county's population surged during this time, as soldiers and their families moved into the area.

Today, Hardin County continues to be an important part of Texas' history and economy. It offers a mix of rural and suburban areas, with agriculture and oil production remaining vital industries. The county is proud of its heritage, with several historical landmarks and museums, preserving its past for future generations.
