Fayette County Courthouse

In November 1838 the Commissioners Court authorized the purchase for $250.00 of a new courthouse. The building, formerly occupied by Ben F. Nabers as a store and saloon, was purchased from James S. Lester and William M. Eastland and moved from the present site of the First National Bank to the courthouse square. The move and repair were conducted by G. S. Kornegay. Little is known about the building. The small structure was of wood construction measuring 30 by 16 feet with double front doors and five windows on each of the two longer sides. Local illustrations of the courthouse depict it as a pier and beam building with a gabled roof and simple steps leading to the front doors. Described in some accounts as a shanty, the building was not well suited for court proceedings. In fact, District Court was held in rented quarters and office space for county officials was rented from surrounding businesses. The courthouse, containing no interior partitions or offices was used for public meetings and as church quarters for several local congregations. The building is believed to have been demolished in 1847 to make room for a new courthouse.

The Texas Historical Commission's (THC) nationally recognized and award-winning Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program (THCPP) has turned around the trend of disrepair and begun restoring these treasured historic landmarks. Texas has more historic courthouses than any other state. Today more than 240 courthouses still stand that are least 50 years old. About 80 were built before the turn of the 20th century. By the end of that century, most of these structures were significantly deteriorated due to inadequate maintenance, insensitive modifications or weather related damage. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) documented the condition of 50 of the state’s oldest courthouses in the late 1990s and determined that counties lacked the resources to preserve the buildings for future generations.

The discovery of oil and gas reserves further bolstered the local economy. Today, Fayette County is known for its agricultural industry, with crops like cotton and corn, as well as cattle ranching. It also attracts tourists with its historical sites, including the Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites, which commemorate important moments in the county's history.
