Lenoir County, located in the eastern part of North Carolina, has a rich and diverse history that dates back thousands of years. The area was originally populated by indigenous tribes, including the Tuscarora and Neusiok tribes, who relied on the fertile land and abundant natural resources for their livelihoods.

European settlers arrived in the 1700s, primarily of English and Scottish descent, establishing plantations and bringing enslaved Africans to work in agriculture. Lenoir County was officially formed in 1791 and named in honor of William Lenoir, a prominent North Carolina politician and military officer during the American Revolutionary War.
