Alexander County is located in the western part of North Carolina, designated as one of the state's inland counties. Its history dates back to the early 18th century when European settlers began moving into the region. Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, the area was later explored by pioneers looking to establish new settlements west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

In 1753, Alexander County was formed from parts of neighboring counties, including Rowan and Iredell. The county was named in honor of William Julius Alexander, who was an officer in the American Revolutionary War. During its early years, Alexander County's economy was primarily agrarian, with tobacco, corn, and wheat being the main crops.

During the Civil War, Alexander County sent many of its residents to fight for the Confederacy.
