In the mid-1800s, logging became the dominant industry in Alcona County. Vast forests of white pine provided ample opportunity for timber companies, attracting settlers who worked in logging camps and sawmills. The lumber boom led to the establishment of several towns, including Harrisville, which became the county seat in 1869.
As the timber resources dwindled, the county underwent a transition in the late 19th century. Many residents turned to farming, taking advantage of the fertile soil and favorable climate. Agriculture became a significant economic driver, with crops such as potatoes, beans, and hay being cultivated.
In the early 20th century, recreational tourism began to grow in importance for Alcona County. Visitors were drawn to the area's picturesque landscapes, including the beautiful coastline along Lake Huron. Today, the county continues to embrace its natural beauty and rich history, offering a range of outdoor activities, such as fishing, boating, hiking, and camping, making it a popular destination for tourists and residents alike.
