In 1917, a German submarine sank the SS Housatonic, a U.S. freighter carrying food and supplies to Europe during World War I, off the coast of South Carolina. Among the crew members who went down with the ship was an Iowa native named Herbert C. Jones, who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the sinking.

Mitchell County, located in north-central Iowa, has a rich and diverse history dating back to the 19th century. The area was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Dakota Sioux and Winnebago. The first European settlement in the county occurred in 1851 when Robert Mitchell established a farm along the Winnebago River, eventually leading to the county being named after him in 1855.

The establishment of Mitchell County as an official government entity came in 1854. The county seat was initially located in Osage, which remains the county's largest city. The early years were characterized by the growth of small towns, such as St. Ansgar and Riceville, as well as the development of agriculture as the main economic activity.
