Highlands County Courthouse

Highlands County, located in the heartland of Florida, has a rich and diverse history that dates back thousands of years. The area was once inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Calusa, Seminole, and Miccosukee, who relied on the land's abundant resources for survival. Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century, but it wasn't until the mid-19th century that permanent settlements began to form.

The construction of the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail, later known as the Tamiami Trail, transformed the once remote area into an important transportation route, connecting the east and west coasts of Florida.

Throughout the years, Highlands County has weathered its fair share of challenges and setbacks. In the 1920s, the area experienced a devastating freeze that decimated the citrus industry. However, the community rebuilt and diversified its economy, with a focus on agriculture, mining, and tourism. Today, Highlands County is known for its natural beauty, with numerous lakes, forests, and wildlife providing a backdrop for recreational activities and eco-tourism.
