About National Register Listings
The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. The District was originally much larger: The District of Columbia originally included land from both Maryland and Virginia, but in 1846, the portion of the District that had been taken from Virginia was returned to the state.
