( Marker is on R Street Northwest just west of 14th Street Northwest, on the right when traveling west.)

The District was the site of the first public monument to George Washington: The Washington Monument, which stands in the center of the National Mall, was built to honor the first U.S. president. It was completed in 1884, more than 50 years after construction began.
