( Memorial is on 7th Street Northwest north of Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, on the right when traveling north.)
Marker installed: 1907

The District was originally much larger: The District of Columbia originally included land from both Maryland and Virginia, but in 1846, the portion of the District that had been taken from Virginia was returned to the state.
