The county was officially formed in 1781, named after General William Campbell, a prominent figure during the Revolutionary War. Campbell County played a significant role in the American Civil War, with major battles and skirmishes taking place in the area. The Battle of Lynchburg, fought in the county seat in 1864, was a key Confederate victory that helped stall Union General Hunter's campaign through the Shenandoah Valley.
