Rooks County Courthouse

Rooks County, Kansas, located in the central part of the state, has a rich and diverse history that dates back to the early 19th century. Originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Pawnee and Cheyenne, European settlers began to explore the region in the mid-1800s. In 1867, a few years after the American Civil War, Rooks County was formally established and named after John C. Rooks, a private who died during the Battle of Prairie Grove in Arkansas.
