The county was officially established on December 21, 1843, and was named after Garrett Davis, a Kentucky senator. The area grew rapidly in the mid-1800s as more settlers arrived and established farms and communities. Coal mining also became a significant industry in Davis County, contributing to its economic growth.
During the Civil War, many residents of Davis County enlisted in the Union Army, and the area actively supported the Union cause. After the war, the county continued to develop, with the construction of schools, churches, and businesses. The county seat, Bloomfield, became an important center for commerce and administration.
