The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.
In the 19th century, Manatee County experienced rapid growth and development. The first permanent settlement, called Braden Castle, was established in 1842. The region quickly became known for its fertile land, which attracted settlers interested in agriculture and farming. The county's economy grew as farmers cultivated crops like citrus fruits, vegetables, and tobacco. In addition to agriculture, fishing and boating industries also thrived along the coastline.
