The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.
During the early 19th century, the county experienced significant growth and development. The town of Athens was founded in 1818 and quickly became a center of commerce and education. Limestone County also played a crucial role in the early years of the state of Alabama, serving as the meeting place for the state's first constitutional convention in 1819.
One of the county's most notable historical events occurred during the Civil War. In 1862, the Battle of Athens took place near the town of Mooresville, resulting in a Union victory. Limestone County was occupied by Union forces for much of the war, and many of the county's buildings and infrastructure were destroyed.
