Crockett, Texas 75835
Location: Driving Directions:From SH 7 in Ratcliff, go 5.6 miles north on FM 227. Cemetery is in fenced pasture on right (east) side of road, approx. 91 ft. from road. There is a historical marker on shoulder and an overgrown cemetery sign on fence row.Historical Subject Marker:1) Robert S. Patton Family CemeteryThe cemetery is highly endangered. It is not a map feature and is located on private property. The cemetery is not maintained and is partly fenced. Grazing cattle enter the cemetery freely. As a result, several of the grave markers are damaged or fallen. A historical subject marker for the cemetery is posted on the shoulder of FM 227, and a cemetery sign is located on the fence row between the subject marker and cemetery. However, the cemetery sign is overgrown and not visible from the roadway. Although the cemetery is located in a private pasture, behind a barbed wire fence, it is accessible to the public. Rubber sheathing has been placed around the barbed wire strands so one can slip between the strands without snagging the barbs.

To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
