Crockett, Texas 75835
Location: Driving Directions:From Loop 304 in Crockett, go 6.8 miles northwest on FM 229. Turn right at CR 2140 and go 2.0 miles north. At the end of the county road, turn left and go approximately 0.2 mile west on private community road. Cemetery is on left (east) side of road. It is heavily overgrown and very difficult to see. It is enclosed by chain link fence and surround by houses. This cemetery is highly endangered. It is a map feature, and it is fully fenced. However, it is very overgrown and neglected. There is also evidence of dumping associated with nearby houses. Many of the cemetery features appear to be missing or are severely deteriorated and hidden under the heavy overgrowth. One grave near the center of the cemetery is enclosed with an ornate wood fence, which has collapsed. At least two other graves appear to have been enclosed with similar fences, but only the corner posts remain. The cemetery is located in a resort/vacation community on Lake Houston. Access to the cemetery is restricted. The cemetery gate is locked, and there are no signs indicating a cemetery at this location.

To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
