In addition to its obvious merits as a particularly fine example of a high-style Second Empire house, this residence is notable as the home of Captain Daniel Holland, an early leader in the promotion of industrial development in Lewiston.

Holland was an important member of the Lewiston community during its period of greatest growth. A successful businessman, dealing with lumber and real estate, he became 1868 a member of the Governor's Council and later served two terms in the Maine State Senate.
