Jones Cemetery

Location: Driving Directions:From the intersection of FM 256 and US 190, travel 4.0 miles north on FM 256. Turn left onto CR 3630 and go 1.7 miles till the road dead ends at a house. Go through gate and follow the road for 0.2 mile to a barn at northeast corner of property. Go through a second gate behind barn and take immediate right. Go another 0.3 mile south on old road. From this point, the cemetery is located approx. 0.2 mile south of road, across creek. The cemetery is highly endangered. It is not a map feature and is located in a very remote area on private property. In order to access the cemetery, one may need special transportation and a guide. The cemetery contains no headstones, only four metal funeral markers and rough concrete markers. The cemetery is very overgrown and neglected. A dilapidated barbed wire fence encloses the cemetery.

To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
