Austin, Stephen F., Elementary School

319 Lipscomb St., Fort Worth, TX

The Stephen F. Austin School was designed by the distinguished Fort Worth architectural firm of Messer, Sanguinet, and Messer; it was erected in 1892, a major addition was made in 1909, and a small kitchen added in 1958. Happily, the original architectural vocabulary was maintained in both additions. The heavy Romanesque Revival style was used throughout, with its large arches and massive voussoirs. Stone quoins, lintels, and sills also help characterize the style. The building is of further importance since it is the oldest extant school in Tarrant County, having been used as a school for a total of 85 years. Now owned by Williamson-Dickie Manufacturing Company, the structure has been sympathetically and imaginatively rehabilitated.
