From SA courthouse FM 3230 for 4.2 miles, turn E or R on FM 1279 for 0.4 mile, then N or left on dirt road, aka Calgary Rd, at railroad tracks. Pass in front of old Bland Lake post office, continue 1.2 miles to fork, keep R. Continue 0.1 mile to another fork, keep L. Goi 0.2 mile, over railroad track. Continue another 0.3 mileto another fork, keep left, then 0.4 mile to a tri-fork, keep straight, then 0.3 mile to site. Whitton Cem is on R, at site of old Whitton homeplace. Large iron gate with ten foot arch, Whitton Cem. Two acres, began with child burial in rosegarden of homeplace. Approx ten marked graves, approx 40 known unmarked. THC site visit MB 5-28-05 alone: San Augustine and Shelby Co line, roadway and CR #s suggest access and most of site in San Augustine Co. Formal site adjacent to gravel road extension of FM 3230, surrounded by small Pines, a few large Oaks. Formal arched entryway but no fence. Cable across front. To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
