Spring Ridge is on Farm Road 354 by Spring Lake, eleven miles northwest of San Augustine in northwestern San Augustine County. In 1904 the Spring Ridge school enrolled twenty pupils under one teacher. In 1940 the community had a church, a cemetery, and scattered dwellings. By the 1980s Spring Ridge consisted of a number of dwellings scattered along the lakeshore. Mark Odintz SOURCE McXie W. W of San Augustine on SH 21 to FM 354 N for 6.0 miles, past two bends, then at Y FM 354 ends and becomes CR 229. Cem sign on road, CR 229 sandy lane, cem on E or right, approx 1 mile. Large fenced formal site, sign at gate. Diversity of formal markers, obelisks, slabs, some fieldstones, commercial markers. Old church site about 130 ft. on NW side of road, with memorial marker, second memorial for old church outside of cemetery approx 60 ft to E of road. Pavillion picnic area. To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
