From FM 83 S on FM 705 to FM 3173, turn W on FM 3173 for 4.5 miles to site. At extension of FM road TxDoT sign, “Cemetery”. Site is on small rise approx 140 ft. W from gravel road. Large parking area, Oak trees. Arched entryway, “Coleman” fenced formal site with considerable divsersity of formal markers, unique early castings, engraved limestone, also obelisks, natural fieldstones, modern commercial markers, some tin markers, some bricks. Photo enamels. Several towering, huge Cedar marker trees. One grave noted outside of fence, gate in fence, Hopson family. Wooded area adjacent, no buffer. Abundant floral grave materials, detailed maintenance. US veterans. CSA. Many graves of Hopson family in E area of cemetery, Coleman family in middle and others, with more recent graves to W area of cemetery near gate. Coleman Cemetery. Approx 0.90 acre. SA-C084. To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
