Location: SB-C084 Corinth Cemetery Corinth Cemetery off Crocket Lane on Corinth Cem. Lane. USGS point. THC site visit MB 6/28/04: Sexton, Tx area. Near Sweet Cem. Off SH 87 on Crockett Lane for approx 1 mile, right onto Corinth Cemetery Lane for about 1,000 feet on small dirt lane through field to cemetery site at slight rise. Surrounding area suggests recent clear-cut logging, possible prior endangerment of cem. site. Newly fenced cemetery site, formal and informal markers, great diversity over time. Some obelisks, also local castings, unique and folk markers, petrified wood, carnes, curbing, gravel, slabs and mounding. Some photo enamels. No current marker trees or shrubs but large stumps of probable previous marker Cedar trees and other hardwood. Pasture grasses groundcover. Abundant floral and decorative grave materials. Approx 1.2 acres. GPS 31.34.23.63707N –93.56.50.27875W. Quad 3193-322.Medium risk of endangerment, commercial logging area, but maintained, fenced, still in use, sign on roadway, on USGS map. AA 3193-322 VERIFY name.
To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the
Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.
The Historic
Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by
recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent
to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic
Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.
A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition
for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s
presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or
agency may submit a request for designation.
