Location: Thompson-Atkinson Cemetery:Co, Tx Cems, vol 1-2 (1991)AKA Atkinson-Thompson -Cem—Recorded, SE area: LEE04, LEE05—Parsons. .—SEE Lee Co, Tx Cems, vol 1-2 (1991): “US 290 E from Giddings 6 miles, left on FM 180 for 1.6 miles, left on CR 127 for 3.1 miles to cattle guard on right. Turn in at cattle guard to Oscar Siegmund home. Cem. located 0.2 mile behind his house, next to a tank, not fenced, cows roaming. Markers, also bush and tree makers, rocks. Index.” THC Site Visit MB 10/08/03. Spoke with J. Atkinson, landowner. Small cem. on knoll, pond to N and land sloping to SE. Thompson markers. Atkinson said his family knew of no relationship to cem, that only Thompson markers at site. Reportedly someone told landowner that there had been maybe a dozen on more graves at site. Now only a few formal markers and one large granite fieldstone marker. Site behind barn, somewhat protected but no fence. Two very large Oak trees to E of site. Vines obscure area to E of cem. Graves face E. Known by landowner Atkinson as Thompson Cemetery, has no knowledge of connection with his Atkinson branch of family, suggests perhaps only because it's on Atkinson land. Approx 0.02 acre remaining with markers, unknown boundaries. GPS 30.13.26.66162N -96.48.03.77510W. Quad 3096-224.Highly endangered. No fence, only a few markers remain. Known to landowner, mows remaining markers, avoids additional damage to site.

To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
