Location: Sanders Cemetery.—McDade, Tx.-Tombstone. Recorded, NE area, LEE02, LEE04—Parsons SEE Lee Co, Tx Cems, vol 1-2 (1991). “From Lexington FM 969 W for 8.9 miles, turn on CR 307 for approx 2.2 miles to end of road. Cem at end of road, enclosed in chain link fencing, wel kept. Only about 1/4th of cem has been used, the SE corner. Land given by Breiton Sanders, house stood on hill behind W side of cem. At one time there was a road just outside the front gate of this cem, the old Brenham to Austin stagecoach road. Earliest burial about 1880s.” .THC site visit MB 9/01/03: Near McDade, CR 307, end of CR before turns and becomes Private Road. Fenced site, arched entryway. Formal markers, diversity over time, some fieldstone and creative markers. Marker shrubs, including Cedar, Mimosa and Oleander, Roses, Irises. Family plots, curbs. Some photo enamels. Adjacent to woodlands, road, pasture, rural residences. US veterans. Approx 1.07 acres. GPS 30.20.56.4903N –97.10.48.11818W. Quad 3097-142.

To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
