Location: Keng Cemetery, Giddings.—SEE Lee Co, Tx Cems, vol 1-2 (1991): “FM 2440 W of Giddings for 0.8 mile, right on CR 113 for 1.8 miles across Hockel Branch Bridge. Left at lane, thru gate, cem. in small grove of trees on right in a pasture. ICem is not fenced [1984], cows roaming, all markers are laying on the round, only foundations and small stones remain in place. Brick vault scattered, only foundation. Several broken stones. Large Cedar marker trees. Earliest about 1880s, Index.”--Tombstone. THC site visit MB 10/08/03: Highly endangered condition. Just beyond chained gate, about 250 feet, on the right in small grove of isolated cedars. About 50 ft. to angled fence line of neighbors property. Continued and severe cattle damage, grove of shady Cedar marker trees, cows standing on formal markers, all broken. Photos document. Permission to visit gained from adjacent neighbor who reported others visit frequently visit site, that land owned by Albert Nampkin [sp??], and that related family had request to put up a fence and restore stones but landowner refused.” Approx 0.08 acre. To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
