Very well kept. Next to cemetery there was once a Brethern Church, and also a Catholic church. The Catholic cemetery is to the E of Hrancie Cem. Churches moved to Dime Box..: --Tombstone. Recorded, NE area. LEE04, LEE05—Parsons. THC site visit MB 9/27/03: Large cemetery, fenced on 2 sides, open area to E. All graves face E. Diversity of markers over time, mostly formal, sculptural. Abundant floral and decorative grave materials. Brick buttress and entry arch. Surrounded by pasture and farm land, a few farm residences. High hill, vista. Notice in mailbox at cem indicates: “Dime Box Brethren Church Christian Sisters … keep up Hrancie cem for about 20 years …maintenance, grass mowing throught year … Flags are put out at Veterans Day … donations. Dime Box Brethren Ch, 8361 FM 141 Dime Box, Tx 77853.”NOTE: Older structure of outhouse, no longer useable, is just to W of St. Joseph’s fence, on what appears to be Hrancie side. Also piles of brush trimmings. Unclear which or if either cem is assoc. with the outhouse or piles of brush.THC information update about adjacent cems, MB 11/25/03. Local historian Jean Davis explained that Hrancie was an 1800s Czech immigrant community. Cem includes Brethren church members and is also a community cemetery. Site only maintained by Brethren Church. Hrancie Cem is not as large as visual area suggests. The larger site was originally deeded as a school and church site and cem.. The adjacent St. Joseph’s Cem also included a small Czech and German Catholic Church inside the Cem. To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the
Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.
The Historic
Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by
recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent
to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic
Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.
A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition
for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s
presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or
agency may submit a request for designation.
