Location: Gloyna Cemetery, Lincoln--Tombstone. .—SEE Lee Co, Tx Cems, vol 1-2 (1991)THC site visit THC site visit—MB 7/25/03 and MB 11/19/03. Small formal cemetery, partially fenced in wooded area on CR 440 off SH 21, E of US 77. CR 440 about 0.1 mile, N side of roadway. About 0.15 mile E is the Gloyna School THC subject marker. Reuther family gave land for school at Gloyna community. Met with Mr. Reuther at site. He lives nearby and daily maintains his family graves. Also showed me the Marburg family graves, separately fenced at back. Area in middle of cemetery appears to be a sitting area for visits among local residents, chairs, table, bench. Some floral grave materials. Formal markers, some diversity over time. Many Irises, Cedar and Oak marker trees. Approx 1 acre. GPS 30.18.57.35660N –96.56.23.08084W Quad 3096-232.

To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
