Hill County Jail
N. Waco St., Hillsboro, TXThe Hill County Jail has served in its original capacity since its construction in 1893. This excellent example of nineteenth-century Texas public architecture displays the castellation deemed appropriate for jails at the time. Its architect, W.C. Dodson, is responsible for many fine buildings in the north Texas region.
Dodson, the architect for the jail, also designed the Hill County Courthouse. Dodson utilized the popular style which features. massive forms and lofty fenestration for the jail. This was a popular style for Texas jails built at this time. Dodson's Waco firm designed many of the courthouses in the surrounding area as well as a building on the North Texas State University Campus.
This jail was the third one built in Hill County and has served its purpose well. It will eventually be replaced by a more modern facility. It is the hope of the area residents that this fine piece of work so characteristic of Texas will be utilized
as a museum.
Listed in National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
