Mary Case & Her Mother Cemetery

a.k.a. Mary Case Grave

Hillsboro, Texas
Location: I-35 west to FM 934 E. East .1 miles to HCR 4254. Right (S) following road as it curves back to the east a total of 3 miles to HCR 4307. East on HCR 4307 .5 miles to gate at 228 HCR 4307. Cemetery is 20 yards SE of road under trees.Mary, Wife of Eli Case, d. 1876, is the only marker at the site. The marker is broken at the base by cattle, and the headstone is leaning on a nearby tree. The base appears to be in its original location. The mother of Mary Case is believed to be buried at this site as well but the location is unknown. The site is not fencd and cattle have been in the site. Mac Ellison, caretaker of the Rockwall Cemetery, plans to fence the gravesite.

To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
