House at 1222 Harvard Street

1222 Harvard St., Houston, TX

The House at 1222 Harvard is highly illustrative of the Queen Anne style influence on speculative residences in Houston Heights at the turn of the century. Mr. Roy L. Whitehead, at the time county attorney for Harris County, purchased this lot and an adjoining lot in 1906. The houses built on these lots were completed within three years of each other. Mr. Whitehead's optimism in the future growth of the area was typical of the residents and investors who developed this suburb. The house saw numerous short term owners over the years. The longest single occupation was from 1925 to 1930 by a building contractor and his wife, William H. and Anna Collins. "They kept the house as an investment for several more years. The house represents the simplicity and craftsmanship found in speculative houses constructed in the Heights during this period.
