Luckenbach School

3566 Luckenbach Rd., Fredericksburg, TX

Luckenbach School is in southeastern Gillespie County, Texas, approximately eleven miles southeast of the county seat of Fredericksburg. The school complex consists of five buildings and three structures built between 1905 and 1949, on the site of the Luckenbach School since 1855. The two-acre school site on the north side of Luckenbach Road includes a rectangular-plan 1905 limestone schoolhouse with a 1949 hollow clay tile addition, a plastered-wall teacherage from 1907 on the site of the original schoolhouse, a cistern, a well-house, garage, barbecue pit, and two privies. The school grounds have been a center of social activity in Luckenbach since the school was established in 1855. With relatively little alteration since the school was closed in 1964, the site presents an intact view of rural life from the early twentieth century.
