The building has interesting architectural details. Built by the Catholic Diocese of Galveston, although specific church uses are not documented. By 1898, Newson and Gottheil (the Model Market) were listed at the address. The market remained here into the 1920s. The property and the adjoining property at 1921 Market form an important visual and architectural link between the Strand Historic District and the Grand Opera House.
