Post Oak Cemetery #1

a.k.a. Post Oak-Dew Cemetery, Keechi Cemetery

Fairfield, Texas 75840
Location: This is a difficult to locate cemetery on a dirt road in the southern part of Freestone County. From Teague travel out FM 80 through Freestone to Donie; at this intersection you will see the Donie State Bank on the left, the Post Office across the street from the bank, and as you are stopped at the stop sign, you will see a blacktop road before you. Take a right at this intersection and go about 2 blocks to FM 80. Turn left about 100 feet before reaching FM 80 and take the dirt road and continue for about 1 mile to another fork. Take the left road so that you are driving along the railroad track. The cemetery is about 3-4 blocks beyond the tracks on the left.

To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
