Quarters Number 1

a.k.a. Pershing House;Building 228

228 Sheridan Rd., Fort Bliss, TX

Perhaps no single structure on the post represents it more succinctly than does Quarters Number 1. From its completion in 1910 until today, this original Field Officer's quarters have been a source of community pride and national at times, international interest. Its history is a brief encyclopedia of three-quarters of a century of the American military with emphasis on its social and diplomatic aspects. National recognition not only would be in order but also would be a statement of a theme of the U.S. Army's involvement and identity in the settlement and colonization of the Southwest. Quarters Number 1, is an idiomatically American architectural statement of universal charm and potential museum quality, prominently situated in the midst of a vast international military complex. Continuation of its original use is vital to insure the continuation of that statement.
