Wofford-Finney House

202 E. Prairie St., Cuero, TX

The Wofford-Finney House is a well-crafted local example of Queen Anne architecture, eligible for the National Register in the area of Architecture. Tax records indicate that S.V. Slonecki built the house in about 1891 for James R. Wofford. Fetus Farnsworth purchased the building in 1904 and sold it five years later to W.D. Finney, a prominent local physician. The property stayed in the Finney family until 1974 when the present owners bought it.

As one of Cuero's best-preserved 19th-century houses, this residence employs a common form (L-plan) and features Queen Anne detailing. Particularly noteworthy are the chamfered supports on the porch and the ornate jigsawn woodwork. The building is sheathed in aluminum siding, which detracts from the integrity of the building. However, this siding matches the width and scale of the original boards and the remaining wood architectural elements remain intact. The overall architectural and historical integrity of the house remains relatively unimpaired and the building still conveys its historic appearance.
