Wittenbert, Dane, House

402 S. Hunt, Cuero, TX

One of Cuero's most outstanding and best-preserved center-passage dwellings, this house has remained virtually unaltered since the 1880s. It was the home of Dane Wittenbert who, according to an article that appeared in 1906, was responsible for moving many of the houses from Indianola. This house features Greek Revival details such as the classical cornice and eave returns. The chamfered-wood posts and jig-sawn brackets are also noteworthy but are more typical of Victorian-era houses.
