English-German School

201 E. Newman, Cuero, TX

This simple structure was built in 1877 and is reputed to be Cuero's first school building. It was financed by the English-German School Association, and students were taught both languages. It stands in what was Cuero's German community. Soon after the local school district was officially organized, the building was conveyed to the Cuero school system. By 1911, the building was converted into a residence by Robert Mernitz, and it is owned by family descendants. This structure is a vivid reminder of Cuero's German heritage and early educational efforts.
