STEVENS CEMETERY

JOSEPH (1810-1861) AND SARAH ANN STEEN (1820-1860) STEVENS, ALONG WITH RELATIVES AND A NUMBER OF SLAVES, ARRIVED IN THIS AREA IN 1846 AS PART OF A WAGON TRAIN OUT OF RANKIN COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI. THEY BOUGHT LAND FROM MEMBERS OF GREEN DeWITT'S COLONY AND BEGAN TO FARM AND RAISE CATTLE NEAR THIS SITE. THE 1851 GRAVE OF THEIR INFANT SON, JOSPEH ENOCH STEVENS, HAS THE OLDEST MARKER IN THIS FAMILY BURIAL GROUND; THE INFANT'S GRANDFATHER ELISHA STEVENS (1776-1851), WAS LAID TO REST NEARBY A FEW MONTHS LATER. HONORED HERE ARE STEEN, STEVENS, AND STEPHENS FAMILY PIONEERS, VETERANS AND DESCENDANTS, THE HERITAGE OF THIS AREA OF DeWITT COUNTY.
