George M. Terrell Home

Built 1873. One of first homes in Cooper (made county seat, 1870). Has original bois d'arc foundation blocks, curved stairwell, pine sills.

Terrell (1843 - 1916) served in 9th Texas Regiment during Civil War. Became successful merchant after starting his business here in 1873.

Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) - 1965.

The first oil well in the United States was drilled in Texas in 1859. The discovery of oil transformed the economy of the state and helped to make Texas one of the wealthiest states in the nation.
