Straus House

400 Cedar, Cedar Hill, TX

This house was built by the town's leading merchant, E. E. Straus. Straus opened his drygoods store in Cedar Hill in about 1880. The store was taken over by his wife and sons after their father's death in 1885 and operated continuously until mid-century. The Straus brothers had extensive business and land holdings in southwest Dallas County in the early twentieth century. In the 1920s, a branch store was opened in Duncanville.
