Harlan Building

The Harlan Building is the most significant historic building associated with the City of Dallas' produce market area andrepresents a prominent early 20th-century warehouse and distribution facility for agricultural products in the Dallasmetropolitan area. The Harlan Building refiects the rising importance of rail transportation and food preservation in thesales, storage and distribution of agricultural products during the early 20* century, which allowed for increased distancebetween suppliers and their markets. Although the Harlan Building was one of the first agricultural businessesconstructed in the area, many more followed. Together they generated the development of the Municipal Market, whichcontinues to be a thriving anchor and attraction in downtown Dallas, as well as a functioning wholesale agriculturalmarket for the region. The building qualifies for listing in the National Register under Criterion A in the area of commerce, at the local level of significance, for its association with changing trends in agricultural product sales, storage and distribution in Dallas during the early 20th century.
