McKinney Commercial Historic District

Roughly bounded by Herndon, Wood, Cloyd, Davis, Louisiana, MacDonald, and Virginia Sts., McKinney, TX

The McKinney Commercial Historic District is a cohesive group of late 19th- and early 20th-century commercial buildings and includes much of the town's old commercial/ retail center. The vast majority of the buildings within the district were erected between 1875 and 1932 and were built in a variety of styles. Despite their stylistic and age differences, these structures have similar materials, proportions, scale, and use; when viewed collectively they convey a strong sense of place. Most of the buildings retain their historic integrity and add to the significance of such well-known Texas architects as F. E. Ruffini and Lang & Witchell provide outstanding examples of high-style architecture; vernacular styles, however, are more characteristic of the district's overall feeling. The city's participation in the National Trust Main Street Project has targeted the downtown area for a coordinated effort, both by the city government and the private sector, in the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings.
