Johnson, John, House

302 Anthony, McKinney, TX

This two-story dwelling is an outstanding local example of an I-house and is one of the town's oldest extant residences. This plan
the type was built in great numbers in Mckinney during the 1870s and 1880s. Few, if any, extant examples display such noteworthy detailing or have remained as unchanged as this dwelling. While this type of house was often simply detailed, this particular structure features a classically detailed entablature with dentils and consoles. The exact date of Construction is unknown, but it appears in its present form in 1691 Bird's Eye View of McKinney. The 1-story rear ell probably predates the 2-story section and was likely the original dwelling. Pioneer merchant John Johnson, a Virginia native, built the house and lived there until his death in 1928.
