Kinchion, L. B., House

a.k.a. #25

702 S. Pearl St., Belton, TX

The Kinchion House, built in 1929, is a good example of a small well-crafted bungalow with Arts and Crafts detailing. Contextually, the house relates to community and Regional Development, specifically to the growth of the middle class in the years between the World Wars. The property meets National Register Criterion c, significant in the area of Architecture, as the best example in Belton of an Arts and Crafts bungalow.

The Kinchion House was built in 1929 by L. B. Kinchion, a prominent member of the local black community and for a time Grand Chancellor of the black Knights of Pythias. Members of the Kinchion family still own the property.
Arts and Crafts was a popular style for small houses between about 1905 and the 1930s. Although a comparatively late example of the style, this house is unusually well-detailed. Particularly noteworthy are the ornamental rafter ends and shaped knee braces, and the large pergola on the north side of the house that is suggestive of the Chalet inspiration for the bungalow design.
