Oak Hill Cemetery

78 Oak Hill Cemetery Road, Bastrop, Texas 78602
Location: CR 2336, McDade, in Camp Swift, 3 miles SE of McDade. From Highway 71 in Bastrop, take Highway 95 north to Hwy 2336. Turn right onto 2336 and go northeast to Oak Hill Cemetery Road. Turn right on Oak Hill Cemetery Road and go about a 1/2 mile. The cemetery is on the right. From Highway 290 at McDade, Texas, turn south on Hwy 2336 and go about 4.5 miles to Oak Hill Cemetery Road. Turn left on Oak Hill Cemetery Road and we are on the right about 1/2 mile down. .
A significant cemetery in the area is the Oak Hill Cemetery, established in 1866. It is the final resting place for several Confederate soldiers and veterans of various wars, including the Civil War and World Wars I and II.

To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
