Roesler House

a.k.a. The Old Roesler Place

W of Nelsonville on TX 159, Nelsonville, TX

The Roesler House, near Nelsonville in rural Austin County, is A good example of a late nineteenth century vernacular German farmhouse in the area. The one-and-a-half story structure was built in 1892 by German immigrant Frederick August Roesler, who erected the board and batten residence to replace his 1873 farmhouse that had burned sometime in the late 1800's. According to local tradition, the 1892 house is identical to the original farmhouse. Although Austin County was the site of the first permanent German settlement in Texas, few structures of the German tradition remain today in the county; the Roesler House is one of the few extant German pioneer houses in the county. The structure was owned by the Roesler family until 1970 when the current owners purchased the house. It stands in good condition and retains its historic integrity.
